PAREIDOLIA
The Pareidolia series explores innovative methods to make imaginative paintings. The word ‘pareidolia’ describes the experience of seeing recognizable images within random arrangements of shapes, like finding pictures in clouds.
The Pareidolia series makes new breakthroughs in materials, painting methods, and styles. Traditional Chinese landscape painting is done with ink on rice paper, which is rough and thin and easily absorbs water. The traditional painter used these characteristics to express the atmospheric perspective of the landscape. I prefer to paint with Chinese ink and brush on the smooth surface of Bristol board, quietly capturing the essence of the freehand style of traditional Chinese landscape painting, then adding speculative figurative forms to the image, inspired by pareidolia. The quality of the image results from the properties of the ink on the board, which resists penetration and produces unusually vivid effects, quite different in quality to those of traditional ink painting.
The work is a new fusion of Chinese classical elements and Western visionary imagination. It is a unique artistic expression. My aim is for the whimsical ink landscapes to share the soft depth of tradition with the modern surrealist eye and mind.
